In 1858, a fourteen-year-old girl named Bernadette Soubirous was gathering firewood near a grotto in the French Pyrenees when she saw a lady standing in the rock. She described her carefully, and one detail she kept returning to was the roses — a yellow one resting on each bare foot. Bernadette had no idea who the lady was. It took eighteen visits before she gave her name. The roses came first, and that's why they're here.
